IT-Related SIGs

1. Introduction to IT-related SIGs

Following the IT Strategy Report (originally published in 1992) a number of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) were convened. The intention was that a range of areas of IT, of either a general or specific nature, should be discussed by any interested parties around the University. The SIGs are as formal or informal as their members require, and act to collate and disseminate information about the subject and, where appropriate, make and implement decisions on specific matters. Where there are wider implications or decisions needed, then the SIGs will make recommendations to an appropriate University body.

Each SIG has an electronic mailing list associated with it and, if appropriate, an equivalent network news group. The mailing lists are largely run using the mailing list software on the maillist.ox.ac.uk system. There is generally automatic cross-posting, in both directions, between the mailing list and the equivalent news group.
