IT facilities, training and advice

In Oxford, the provision of all things related to IT is shared amongst the central Computing Services (OUCS), the departments and the colleges. Arrangements differ between departments and colleges as to how much they provide in-house and how much is provided centrally. For example, some departments choose to host and provide their own email service, whilst some utilise the central email service provided by OUCS. Of course there are some University-wide services that naturally fall within OUCS's remit such as the provision and maintenance of the backbone network, the connection to JANET and the Internet, provision of the University's Virtual Learning Environment etc.

1. Services and their providers

Members who are new to the University may like to take a look at the Welcome to IT web site which provides details on how to access the network, obtain email and other accounts, protection against viruses and many other aspects of computing at Oxford.

There are many service providers across the University delivering a wide range of services to support University members in their use of IT. Pointers to both the providers and information on locally specific services are gathered here below:

2. Governance

There are some policies, rules and regulations governing the use of IT facilities in Oxford. The rules and regulations come from a number of committees and groups concerned with IT in Oxford.
