ICT Projects
Further details on the projects sponsored by the Office of the Director of IT are given below. These projects seek to deliver new ICT services and infrastructure for the collegiate University and are grouped together by type.
Projects providing IT Services
-
Groupware (Nexus) Project: A new integrated online
environment for the collegiate University, including email, shared calendar,
document sharing, document management and much more.
These web pages provide historical information on the decisions, planning and project management which led to the project being successfully passed to OUCS for implementation.
- The Core User Directory service is now being implemented by OUCS and will extend the suite of Identity and Access Management services offered by the department. Information on the initial pilot is available within the ODIT pages: CUD Pilot phase. A helpful document describing Access Management is available.
- Wireless Project: The provision of a university-wide, common, managed wireless network infrastructure in public areas such as meeting rooms, libraries, lecture rooms and reception areas.
Green IT Projects
This is one of the major themes of the IT industry today. The Office of the Director of IT seeks to encourage and lead the adaptation of Green IT principles across the University.
- Green IT - Desktop Computing Project: Supporting departments across the University reduce the energy consumed by desktop computers by promoting a 5-step approach to green desktop computing.
- Webex: The OUCS Webex project will trial an online meeting service for the University.
- The University Shared Data Centre Project: The Office of the Director of IT is co-ordinating the planning and implementation of a shared data centre for the University. The project aims to minimise the environmental impact of the new building, the carbon footprint and on-going energy costs whilst providing a secure, reliable and resilient environment for co-location and virtualisation services.
- Banbury Road Data Centre (OUCS): Further details on the feasability study for the planned refurbishment of the Banbury Road Data Centre.
Research Data Management Projects
- VIDaas - Virtual Infrastructure with Database as a Service: An OUCS project funded by JISC/HEFCE under the University Modernisation Fund. VIDaas aims to deliver cost savings and improve the efficiency of UK HE research through the creation of a production-ready hybrid virtual infrastructure (VI) hosting a 'Database as a Service' (DaaS) system
- SUDAMIH - Supporting Data Management Infrastructure for the Humanities: (Project ended March 2011). This was an OUCS project funded by JISC under the Research Data Management Infrastructure Programme. The database component is being developed within the VIDaas project
- EIDCSR - Embedding Institutional Data Curation Services in Research: (Project ended September 2010). An OUCS project funded by JISC under the Information Environment Programme 2009-11
- Scoping Digital Repository Services for Research Data Management Project: (Project ended summer 2009, activities continued through the EIDCSR project.) This project scoped the requirements for curating research data in a federated digital repository.
Improving IT within the University
- ECE (Enhanced Computing Environment) Project: The ECE project aims to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and reliability of the desktop IT services provided to three central departments of the University: University Administration and Services (UAS), Computing Services (OUCS) and the Bodleian Libraries.
- Resilience Project: A project to update and improve the resilience of the distribution network.
Guidance
- Information Security Best Practice: The Information Security Best Practice activity will help the Collegiate University devise and accept a set of recommended common standards for computer and network security.
