projects: scoping digital repository services for research data management - events
Institutional and National Services for Research Data Management Workshop - Monday 20th October 2008
Venue - Oxford Said Business School
This workshop is the second event organised under the umbrella of the Scoping Digital Repository Services for Research Data Management project. The overall aim of the workshop is to hear about examples of support services for research data management in relation to the requirements for services gathered through the interviews with researchers. The event is designed for Oxford researchers to learn about different types of data management services that could potentially be delivered in Oxford as well as for Oxford service providers to discuss those services and their role to support researchers with their data management.
- Raise awareness of best practice in institutional and national support data services
- Complement the findings of the scoping study consultation with Oxford support services
- Help to identify gaps in the provision of services available to researchers to assist with their data management duties
- Stimulate discussion amongst service providers about collaborative ways to address data management needs of Oxford researchers
| A Grand Challenge for the Information AgeNatasha Balac,San Diego Super Computer Center The fundamental driver of the information age is digital data. The state of the Data Cyberinfrastructure today and the efforts in designing and developing infrastructure to enable today's data-oriented applications will be presented. Challenges in building and delivering capable data infrastructure and sustainable digital preservation, the grand challenge for the information age are several of the topics discussed. (PPT 9.7MB) |
| The UK Research Data Service (UKRDS) Feasibility Study-Neil Beagrie, Charles Beagrie Ltd Neil will describe the key findings from the UKRDS feasibility study and the emerging business case for the service. The feasibility study has been funded via the HEFCE Shared Services initiative and has had major input from case studies and partners at the universities of Bristol, Leeds, Leicester, and Oxford. | Tools for Managing Research Data: the Data Audit Framework (DAF) and DRAMBORA - Sarah Jones, Digital Curation Centre. Sarah Jones will introduce the Data Audit Framework, a methodology and online toolkit to assist organisations to identify data assets and explore how they are being managed. Discussion will cover the development of the tool and how it has been tested and validated through pilot implementations. DRAMBORA, a repository audit method, will briefly be profiled as a complementary tool that enables preservation specialists to reflect on and improve their working practices. (PPT 2.1MB) |

In this talk Louise will cover the UKDA advice and training programme on Data Management and Sharing. This is geared primarily towards researchers from the social sciences and humanities who are increasingly obliged to meet Data Sharing Policies, though more recently it has also been aimed at environmental researchers under a cross-council research council programme.(PPT 392KB) |
| The Archaeology Data Service, a subject specific digital repository - Stuart Jeffrey, Archaeology Data Service. This talk will cover some of the general challenges facing digital repositories, especially complex digital objects. It will also look more closely at the impact of the OAIS reference model concept of dissemination and how this impacts on long term archives both in terms of the need for constant research and development and in funding/business models.(PPT 9.4MB) |
| Building Tools to Handle Environmental "omic" Data - Tim Booth, NERC Environmental Bioinformatics Centre. The NEBC handles a diverse range of data from projects combining environmental science and molecular biology. I will outline our approach and in particular the open-source software we develop.
