This project came to a close in summer 2009, however, we are pleased to announce that the activities carried out through the project are continued through the Embedding Institutional Data Curation Services in Research (EIDCSR) project, funded by JISC under the Information Environment Programme 2009-11. An EIDCSR project blog has been set up - please follow our new activities there.
A growing number of funding agencies are now implementing policies requiring researchers to submit data management and data sharing plans with their funding applications. Researchers will need to provide information about the sets of data they will produce, the standards that will adhere to or who will be responsible for the long-term preservation. At the same time, Universities are increasingly taking responsibility for the provision of services to store, curate, disseminate and preserve research outputs through digital repositories. The management of research data presents special challenges. Data are complex and heterogeneous and there is little agreement on standards to describe data across disciplines. The current digital repository infrastructure in Oxford requires extra services and expertise to provide the research data management support needed by researchers in Oxford
Aims and Objectives
The project's overall aim was to scope the requirements, including underlying infrastructure and interoperability, for digital repositories services to store, disseminate and preserve research data generated at Oxford. Objectives:
- Capture and document researcher's requirements for digital repositories services to handle research data
- Participate actively in the development of an interoperability framework for the federated digital repository at Oxford
- Make recommendations to improve and coordinate the provision of digital repository services for research data
- Initiate and develop collaborations with the different repository activities already occurring to ensure that communication takes place in between them
- Raise awareness at Oxford of the importance and advantages of the active management of research data.
- Communicate significant national and international developments in repositories to relevant Oxford stakeholders, in order to stimulate the adoption of best practices
Project Methodology
Luis Martinez-Uribe, based in the Oxford e-Research Centre, was the Digital Repositories Research Co-ordinator, responsible for undertaking the research described above. The post was line managed by Mike Fraser (OUCS), Richard Ovenden (OULS), Anne Trefethen (OeRC) and Paul Jeffreys (ODIT) and reported to the Digital Repositories Steering Group. Luis worked closely with the relevant digital repository constituencies and the research groups that use and produce data.
Deliverables
Findings of the Scoping Study Interviews and Workshop - Reporting on Oxford researchers data management practices and their requirements for services.
Research Data Management Workshop - Held on 13th June 2008 to hear about data management experiences from researchers as well as relevant national initiatives.
